A transponder key is an electronic car key that allows you to lock and unlock your car remotely by pressing buttons for opening and closing. While in the past you needed to get near your car and insert a key to open it, with transponder keys you could be some distance away and be carrying your grocery bags and still open your car or your trunk.
Transponder car keys have been here for some time and it’s rather important to know how they work. The word “transponder” is combination of two words: “transmitter” and “responder”. Whenever you press the button, the transponder transmits a signal which the car then “responds” to.
The signal of a transponder key actually comes from the key’s plastic head. Like regular keys, cars only respond to the transponder keys that have been programmed to them.
Where can you have transponder keys made? You could have them made at car dealerships, however, if you want to save money, you should have them made by locksmiths like us. We are certified locksmiths that have the experience necessary to make transponder keys.
One thing you need to know about transponder keys is that they are not cheap to make. While regular keys need to be cut, transponder keys need to be programmed.
Transponder keys were first introduced in 1995. A small microchip inside the plastic part of the key is programmed with a unique serial number. When a drive wants to unlock a car, the chip sends a “request” to the car to validate the serial number of the chip and respond to the command. If the car does not recognize the serial number, it will not move as the car’s immobilizers would still be in place.
Transponder keys are only available for new and high-end cars. Old cars that use regular keys can be fitted with transponder systems, but this is often expensive because you need to create an electrical system inside the car and make a transponder key. We can, however, do this job for you.
The good thing about transponder systems is that they’ve practically made cars theft-proof, although some car thieves are able to bypass the system.
Anyway, if you’re going to have transponder keys made, make sure to have at least two copies made as replacement keys are expensive. We can also program blank transponder keys.
